Anxiety and Phobias

How do I know if therapy for phobias is right for me?

Perhaps you're ready to take a big trip, call a new friend, or interview for a new job. You have worked hard to prepare, are ready to jump in, yet find your heart racing and palms sweating when the moment comes close. You find yourself catastrophizing and struggling to follow through. If so, you may be relieved to learn that EMDR therapy provides lasting results for different types of phobias.

The 5 different categories of phobia:

  • Situational types (airplanes, elevators, fainting in public)
  • Animal types (spiders, bugs)
  • Natural / environmental types (storms, heights, etc)
  • Injury types (needles, etc)
  • Other, non-specified types (emetophobia)

How can EMDR help with anxiety and phobias?

Research has shown that EMDR is a safe and effective protocol for phobias. By treating the phobic situations as as an unprocessed trauma, EMDR works by reconciling the limbic part of the brain, responsible for fight/flight/freeze with the prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision making and planning, to help you encountered feared objects with ease and foster confidence.
